Influence Your Team and Organisation for Lasting Success

Introduction: Why Influence Matters for Lasting Success

The ability to influence your team and organisation is one of the most critical skills for lasting success. Influence is not manipulation—it is the power to inspire, align, and empower others toward shared goals. Whether you are leading a small project or shaping company culture, influence determines how far your vision will go.

Strong influence comes from clarity of purpose and consistent action. As I explained in Cultivating Confidence: Belief Systems for Growth, your belief system fuels your leadership. Without it, even the best strategies fall flat.

Why Influence Your Team and Organisation is Crucial

Research published by Harvard Business Review shows that influence—not authority—drives results in modern organisations. Influence helps teams stay engaged, reduces resistance to change, and increases productivity.

However, influence requires more than just position. It demands trust, consistency, and credibility. When you influence your team and organisation effectively, you create alignment between daily actions and long-term vision.

For deeper insight on how accountability strengthens this process, read Why Accountability Drives Success.

The Psychology of Influence in Teams

At its core, influence is psychological. People follow those they trust and believe in. According to Psychology Today, persuasion is built on three pillars: credibility, consistency, and empathy.

This ties directly to the Unchained Goals Framework, where belief systems and habits create the foundation for influence. Leaders who act consistently, communicate clearly, and demonstrate empathy naturally gain influence over time.

Steps to Influence Your Team and Organisation Effectively

  1. Lead with Vision and Purpose

People follow clarity, not confusion. A clear vision inspires action and anchors behaviour. As I discussed in Starting 2025 with Clarity: Define Your Vision and Purpose, influence begins when others see how their daily work connects to a larger mission.

  1. Build Trust Through Consistency

Consistency breeds trust. A study in Harvard Business Review on the neuroscience of trust highlights that trust directly improves team engagement and performance. Influence grows when your words and actions align over time.

  1. Communicate with Impact

Facts inform, but stories inspire. Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, and Tim Cook have all shown that powerful communication builds influence far beyond their immediate teams. Speak with authenticity and use storytelling to bring vision to life.

  1. Empower and Involve Others

Real influence multiplies when you empower others. Invite contributions, share responsibility, and create space for growth. For practical guidance, see Success in Teams: Building Supportive Networks.

  1. Model the Behaviour You Expect

Your actions set the tone. If you want accountability, demonstrate it. If you want resilience, show it. Influence comes from being the example others want to follow. Explore how micro-habits drive this in Micro Habits for Maximum Growth.

Overcoming Barriers to Influence

Even the strongest leaders face resistance. Some people resist change; others distrust leadership due to past experiences. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace Report found that only 21% of employees feel engaged at work, showing the challenge of influence.

To overcome barriers:

  • Be transparent in your communication.
  • Link actions to vision consistently.
  • Use accountability systems to track progress and celebrate wins.

Real-World Applications

Individuals: Influence colleagues by showing up consistently and demonstrating reliability.

Projects: Influence project teams by breaking down goals into clear steps and showing how each deliverable connects to success.

Organisations: Influence culture by aligning belief systems, reinforcing accountability, and creating supportive networks.

Conclusion: Influence That Lasts

To influence your team and organisation for lasting success, begin with vision, build trust through consistency, communicate with impact, empower others, and model the behaviours you want to see. Influence is not a single act—it’s a daily commitment that compounds into culture and legacy.

Apply one of these steps this week. Influence grows with action, not intention.
