Finishing Strong: Reflect, Refocus, and Plan for 2025

End of Year Reflection

As the year draws to a close, many people tend to wait until New Year’s Eve to set resolutions—resolutions that often fall apart by mid-January. But the final quarter of the year is actually the perfect time to assess progress, recalibrate strategies, and set yourself up for success in 2025.

For organisations, this is a critical period to review performance against yearly goals, develop lessons from the past months, and refine strategies for the next year. Personally, I’ve been helping clients do just that—guiding them to achieve what once seemed impossible by asking the all-important question: “How?”

Rather than focusing on obstacles, the key is to focus on how the objective can be achieved, how strategies can be improved, and how success can still be attained. It’s a mindset shift from focusing on blockers to exploring possibilities. Here’s why this period is so crucial for reflection, both on an individual and organisational level, and how you can leverage it to finish 2024 strong.

 

  1. The Importance of Learning Lessons and Planning Ahead

While many organisations focus on finishing the year with strong financial results, they often overlook the lessons that could enhance future performance. This is where true growth happens—not just by meeting financial targets but by reflecting on other key areas like people, culture, and process improvements.

Organisations should conduct lessons-learned sessions before the year ends. It’s not just about what went well, but understanding the why behind underperformance. How did your strategies impact your people, and what cultural shifts need to happen? These lessons must feed into the planning for 2025, ensuring continuous improvement.

For individuals, the same applies. Reflection gives you an opportunity to examine what worked and what didn’t. As I’ve written in my book Unchained, this process is key to understanding the habits that either push you forward or hold you back. Waiting until New Year’s Eve to set goals is a recipe for failure because it’s reactive, not proactive.

 

  1. Navigating External Uncertainty with Internal Focus

2024 has been a year of global uncertainty—wars, economic fluctuations, interest rate hikes, and widespread misinformation. Yet, amid these external shifts, the most successful people and organisations maintain a firm focus on their internal goals. It’s all too easy to be distracted by these external factors, but the key is to control what’s in your circle of influence.

For instance, instead of worrying about the next economic downturn, refocus on what you can control—whether it’s saving more, cutting unnecessary expenses, or investing strategically. Organisations should focus on agility, adapting to global trends, and building resilience. As I highlight in Unchained, your environment will influence you, but it’s your internal beliefs and strategies that determine your success.

 

  1. Embrace Goal Reflection for Personal and Professional Growth

At this time of the year, self-reflection should be at the core of your goal-setting process. Ask yourself critical questions:

  • How did you perform against your 2024 goals?
  • What strategies worked, and which didn’t?
  • What lessons can you carry forward into 2025?

For example, this year I’ve hit two of my personal goals, but two others didn’t quite land. In one case, I made assumptions that caused me to fall short. Looking forward, I now realise that those assumptions need to be reassessed, and a new strategy must be employed.

In another project, we met all the key stakeholders, but underestimated the effort required to get formal approval. This lesson is crucial—it teaches us that persistence and adaptability are essential for achieving long-term goals.

 

  1. Reframe Overwhelm into Actionable Steps

Setting goals for 2025 can feel overwhelming, but failing to set goals means you’ll likely stagnate. Reflecting on what didn’t work this year allows you to break big goals down into smaller, manageable steps.

Focus on your “why”—why did you set these goals in the first place? Clarifying your purpose brings clarity and motivation. Use tools like vision boards or digital trackers to make your goals tangible and keep them top of mind.

Remember, true self-reflection isn’t just about what you want to achieve but also about the changes you need to make in your habits, mindset, and approach. Small adjustments—whether it’s financial discipline, improving health, or enhancing relationships—can have profound long-term effects.

 

  1. Practical Strategies for Organisations, Projects, and Individuals

For organisations and projects, this is the perfect time to:

  • Evaluate year-end performance: How did your team meet its goals? What were the key obstacles, and how can they be addressed in 2025?
  • Refine strategies based on emerging trends: Whether it’s climate challenges, economic shifts, or global politics, ensure your goals are flexible and adaptable to external changes.
  • Plan for continued growth: Goals should stretch your capacity but be attainable with the right resources and strategies in place. This also involves revisiting key performance indicators (KPIs) and assessing whether they still align with your vision.

On a personal level, reflect on your life vision. Were your goals aligned with where you want to be in five or ten years? This reflection gives you the insight to re-prioritise or even defer certain goals, ensuring you’re not just busy, but effective.

 

Conclusion: Start 2025 with Purpose

As we approach 2025, remember that setting goals is not a one-time activity, but an ongoing process of refinement, adjustment, and learning. Whether you’re an individual, a project manager, or an organisational leader, now is the time to reflect, strategies, and set yourself up for success in the coming year.

Don’t wait for New Year’s Eve—start today. And as always, keep the how in mind. How can you achieve more? How can you refine your approach? And most importantly, how can you align your goals with your purpose?
