The ‘Why’ Factor: Igniting Emotions for Unstoppable Goal Pursuits

  • By Clement Kwegyir-Afful
  • In Blog

Have you ever wondered why some people are able to achieve their goals with ease and enthusiasm, while others struggle and give up? Have you ever wondered what makes the difference between success and failure, between fulfillment and frustration, between joy and despair?

The answer is not intelligence, talent, or luck. The answer is emotion. Emotion is the fuel that drives your goal pursuits. Emotion is the force that ignites your motivation, resilience, and engagement. Emotion is the factor that determines whether you will pursue your goals with passion and persistence, or with apathy and resistance.

But not all emotions are created equal. Some emotions can empower you, while others can disempower you. Some emotions can inspire you, while others can discourage you. Some emotions can energize you, while others can drain you.

To achieve your goals, you need to tap into the right emotions. You need to tap into the emotions that align with your goals, purpose, and vision. You need to tap into the emotions that support your actions, results, and growth. You need to tap into the emotions that create a positive feedback loop that reinforces your goal pursuits.

And the key to tapping into the right emotions is understanding your why. Your why is the reason behind your goals. Your why is the purpose behind your actions. Your why is the vision behind your results.

In this blog, I will uncover the essential role of understanding your why in propelling your goals forward. I will discuss how connecting your objectives to a deeper purpose can fuel motivation, resilience, and emotional engagement. I will also share practical strategies to identify and leverage your why for consistent progress.

The Role of Why

Why is understanding your why so important for achieving your goals? Because it gives meaning to your goals. It gives direction to your actions. It gives value to your results.

When you understand your why, you are able to answer three fundamental questions that guide your goal pursuits:

  • What do you want to achieve?
  • How will you achieve it?
  • Why do you want to achieve it?

The first question defines your goal. The second question defines your strategy. The third question defines your emotion.

The third question is the most important one because it determines how you feel about your goal, your strategy, and your result. It determines whether you are emotionally invested in your goal or not. It determines whether you are emotionally aligned with your strategy or not. It determines whether you are emotionally satisfied with your result or not.

When you understand your why, you are able to connect your goal to a deeper purpose that transcends yourself. You are able to connect your goal to a bigger picture that inspires you. You are able to connect your goal to a higher value that motivates you.

When you understand your why, you are able to ignite positive emotions that empower your goals.

The Benefits of Why

Understanding your why has many benefits for achieving your goals. Here are some of them:

  • It helps you clarify your goal. When you know why you want to achieve something, you can define it more clearly and specifically. You can also align it with your values and priorities.
  • It helps you choose your strategy. When you know why you want to achieve something, you can select the best way to achieve it. You can also adapt it to your strengths and resources.
  • It helps you overcome obstacles. When you know why you want to achieve something, you can face any challenges or setbacks with confidence and courage. You can also learn from them and grow from them.
  • It helps you stay motivated. When you know why you want to achieve something, you can keep yourself inspired and enthusiastic. You can also celebrate your wins and reward yourself.
  • It helps you enjoy the journey. When you know why you want to achieve something, you can appreciate the process and the progress. You can also have fun and be grateful.

The Strategies of Why

Understanding your why is not always easy or obvious. Sometimes, you may need to dig deeper or explore further to find it. Here are some strategies that can help you do that:

  • Ask yourself the 5 Whys. This is a technique that involves asking yourself “why” five times until you reach the root cause or the core reason of your goal. For example, if your goal is to start a business, you can ask yourself:
  1. Why do I want to start a business? Because I want to be my own boss.
  2. Why do I want to be my own boss? Because I want to have more freedom and flexibility.
  3. Why do I want to have more freedom and flexibility? Because I want to have more control over my life and work.
  4. Why do I want to have more control over my life and work? Because I want to pursue my passion and purpose.
  5. Why do I want to pursue my passion and purpose? Because I want to make a positive impact on the world.

The last answer is your why.

  • Find your ikigai. This is a Japanese concept that means “a reason for being”. It is the intersection of four elements: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Finding your ikigai can help you discover your why by connecting your goal to your passion, skill, mission, and value.
  • Learn from others. Sometimes, it can be helpful to look at other people who have achieved similar goals or who have inspired us with their achievements. We can learn from their stories and their insights on how they found their why and how they used it to achieve their goals.

For example, here are some people who achieved their goals by understanding their why:

  • J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, wanted to write stories that would inspire children and adults alike with magic and imagination. She faced many rejections, hardships, and criticisms along the way, but she never gave up on her dream because she believed in her why.
  • Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, wanted to create products that would change the world with innovation and design. He faced many failures, setbacks, and controversies along the way, but he never stopped pursuing his vision because he was passionate about his why.
  • Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, wanted to fight for girls’ education and rights in Pakistan and around the world. She faced many threats, attacks, and challenges along the way, but she never gave in to fear because she was driven by her why.

Conclusion

Your why is the key to achieving your goals. It is the factor that ignites your emotions for unstoppable goal pursuits. It is the factor that makes the difference between success and failure, between fulfillment and frustration, between joy and despair.

By understanding your why, you can achieve remarkable achievements that can transform your life and work. You can also create a positive synergy between your why and your what and how. You can also learn from real-life examples and scientific insights that can inspire and inform you.

I hope this blog post has helped you do that.
