How to reflect, refocus and recharge your goals

Introduction: Why Mid-Year Is the Perfect Time to Reset

June and July mark the midpoint of the year—an ideal checkpoint to assess your progress, adjust your goals, and realign with your deeper purpose. Many start the year with energy and clarity, only to find that six months later, priorities have shifted, momentum has waned, or life has thrown unexpected curveballs.

This blog provides a structured approach to help you pause, take stock, and move forward with renewed clarity and drive. Using the Unchained Goals Framework, we walk through how to reflect, refocus, and recharge so that you can finish strong.

1. Reflect: Assessing the First Half of the Year

For a deeper dive into how to identify and overcome internal barriers, read Breaking Free: Identifying Limiting Beliefs.

Reflection is not just about reviewing outcomes; it’s about extracting lessons. Ask yourself:

  • What goals did I set in January?
  • Which ones have I achieved, and which have stalled?
  • What habits supported my success, and which ones sabotaged it?
  • What unexpected events impacted my journey?

Tool: Conduct a Life Audit by rating key areas (e.g., health, relationships, finances, purpose, habits) on a scale of 1 to 10. Journaling these insights provides the clarity needed to move forward with intention.

Example: Kofi, a freelance graphic designer, set a goal to expand her client base. By June, she had increased her income but felt burnt out. Through journaling, she realised she had taken on misaligned clients. Her reflection helped her identify the need for values-aligned work.

I’ve achieved a couple of major goals I set for myself back in October 2024, in preparation for 2025. However, there are others where progress has been slower. My reflection includes identifying the skills I still need to develop, the limiting beliefs I need to confront, and assessing whether burnout may be affecting my momentum. Two of the goals I accomplished required substantial effort and emotional investment, which has taken a toll. I also need to reassess some of the strategies I initially implemented to determine whether they are still effective or need adjusting.

2. Refocus: Realigning Goals with Current Priorities

To help realign and set vision-driven goals, check out Practical Tools to Clarify Your Vision.

Now that you’ve reflected, it’s time to refine your direction. Use the SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to redefine your goals.

  • Drop or modify outdated goals.
  • Create short-term milestones to maintain momentum.
  • Align new goals with your purpose, using your core values as a compass.

Example: After reassessing his goals, Ibrahim, an aspiring author, shifted from writing a full novel to publishing a short story collection. This pivot allowed him to maintain creative flow and build confidence.

Tool: Use the Goals Framework from Unchained to map each goal to a purpose, plan, and habit.

3. Recharge: Boosting Motivation and Energy

Explore Daily Practices to Strengthen Empowering Beliefs to support your energy, mindset, and confidence.

Recharging isn’t about taking a holiday—it’s about reigniting your internal drive. Here’s how:

  • Daily habits:Morning routines, gratitude journaling, and visualisation boost resilience.
  • Accountability:Partner with someone who holds you to your standard.
  • Celebrate micro-wins:Each step forward builds belief.

Research by psychologist Carol Dweck, as shared in Harvard Business Review, highlights that a true growth mindset goes beyond positive thinking. It requires embracing challenges, learning from feedback, and believing that effort leads to improvement. This shift in mindset can be the recharge you need to regain motivation mid-year.

Example: Fatima, an HR professional, lost momentum in her goal to start a DEI podcast. She re-energised her commitment by joining a mastermind group that provided weekly encouragement and idea sharing.

Tool: Apps like ThinkUp (affirmations) and Insight Timer (meditations) support mental recharge.

Conclusion: Embrace the Mid-Year Opportunity

For weekly rhythm and practical consistency, revisit Small Steps, Big Impact: Building Consistent Habits.

The halfway point is not a signal that time is running out—it’s an opportunity for transformation. Reflection allows you to learn. Refocusing helps you realign. Recharging equips you to finish the year with renewed energy.

Choose one action today—even if it’s a five-minute journal entry—to reset your trajectory. The second half of the year is yours to shape.

Although this is a mid-year reset, I encourage you to review your goals and strategy more frequently than every six months. Personally, I revisit my full yearly goals, strategies, and milestones every fortnight to assess whether I need to make any tweaks. This regular check-in helps me stay aligned and adaptive as the year unfolds.
