What I Learnt from Writing a Blog Every Week: Lessons on Goals and Growth
Introduction: Purpose Drives Goals
Last week, we discussed how to future-proof your goals by adapting to change and challenges. As we approach the end of the year, I want to reflect on one of my most fulfilling goals of 2024: writing a blog every single week.
This goal was not about likes, recognition, or building a social media following. It was driven by my life’s purpose—helping individuals achieve meaningful lives through goal setting. This purpose has shaped my entire journey, from sleeping on friends’ couches and eating when they cooked, to becoming a consultant, coach, author of two books etc.
When I decided to write weekly blogs, my “why” was clear: to bring my goals framework to life in a practical way. I wanted to help readers not just understand the principles of purpose, habits, belief systems, and planning but also apply them in their own lives, teams, and organisations. Knowing this blog could make a difference for just one person kept me going, even when finding topics and writing every week became challenging.
Here’s what this experience taught me about goals, growth, and perseverance—and how these lessons can inspire you in 2025.
- Habits: The Foundation of Consistency
Writing a blog every week reinforced one of the most important aspects of my goals framework: the power of habits. This isn’t a new concept for me—I’ve used habits as a key tool in my own life and have taught their importance for years. But the process of writing weekly blogs proved just how critical habits are for staying consistent and achieving ambitious goals.
Here’s how habits helped me succeed:
- Reminders: I set up reminders on Wednesdays to start drafting and on Saturdays to publish. These consistent cues helped make blogging a habit rather than a chore.
- Starting Small: Each week, I focused on small steps—brainstorming ideas or writing a single paragraph. This prevented overwhelm and kept me moving forward.
- Routine: Blogging became a non-negotiable part of my schedule. It wasn’t about feeling motivated; it was about committing to the habit.
What you can do: Build small, sustainable habits that align with your goals. Whether it’s saving money, improving your health, or mastering a skill, consistency is key. Habits are the engine that keeps you moving forward when motivation fades.
- Planning: Bringing Strategy to Life
Before I started blogging, I developed a clear strategy for the year: to use my blogs to bring my goals framework to life. Each blog would explore a different aspect of the framework:
- Purpose and Vision: Setting meaningful goals that align with your life purpose.
- The ‘Why’: Understanding your deeper motivation for pursuing each goal.
- Habits: Creating consistent, small actions that power your progress.
- Belief Systems: Cultivating empowering beliefs and breaking free from limiting ones.
- Planning: Developing adaptable strategies to stay on track.
This plan gave structure to my writing and ensured that every blog served a purpose. To stay inspired, I subscribed to weekly research on goals, listened to the challenges faced by my clients, and reflected on my own journey.
What you can do: A solid plan gives you direction and focus. Break down your big goals into manageable steps, align them with your purpose, and stay flexible as you navigate the year.
- Belief System: Trusting the Process
Belief is one of the most powerful drivers of action. Writing these blogs reminded me that your belief system shapes your behaviour. Without self-belief, even the best plans can fall apart.
There were weeks when I doubted whether my blogs were making an impact. But I reminded myself of my purpose: to help someone, somewhere, achieve a meaningful goal. That belief gave me the motivation to keep going, even when it was difficult to find a topic or carve out time to write.
What you can do: Strengthen your belief system by focusing on your “why” and celebrating your progress. Trust the process, even when results aren’t immediate.
- Continuous Learning: Staying Relevant and Evolving
Writing weekly blogs also emphasised the importance of continuous learning. To keep my content fresh and impactful, I committed to staying informed and adaptable:
- Subscribed to weekly goal-setting research to stay updated on trends.
- Reflected on my own goals and challenges to make the content relatable.
- Used new tools, like AI, to streamline the process and create visuals more efficiently.
What you can do: Embrace learning as an ongoing process. Whether it’s reading, attending workshops, or experimenting with new tools, continuous learning helps you stay relevant and improve.
- Reflecting on Wins and Setbacks
Throughout the year, I achieved significant personal and business goals while also facing setbacks. Writing weekly blogs became both a mirror and a guide—it helped me reflect on my own progress and address challenges using the principles I teach.
Some goals exceeded my expectations, while others required flexibility and new partnerships. For the setbacks, I reassessed my strategies, pivoted where necessary, and stayed focused on the bigger picture.
What you can do: Reflection is essential for growth. Celebrate your wins, learn from your setbacks, and adjust your approach as needed.
Conclusion: Purpose Turns Goals into Impact
This year, writing a blog every week wasn’t just a goal—it was a commitment to my life’s purpose. It reinforced the power of habits, the importance of planning, the strength of belief systems, and the value of continuous learning.
As you prepare for 2025, take time to reflect on your own goals:
- Build habits that support consistent action.
- Develop a clear plan to guide your efforts.
- Strengthen your belief system to stay resilient.
- Commit to continuous learning to evolve and grow.
Whatever your goals may be, let your purpose be your anchor. It’s the foundation that keeps you grounded and the fuel that keeps you moving forward.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to a new year of growth, learning, and meaningful impact!
